Japanese Style Platform Beds
A Japanese platform bed combines the comfort and minimalist appeal of a Japanese futon with the sturdiness of a bed frame. Primarily made of wood, they are designed to reflect traditional Japanese culture in both precision and simplicity.
These beds appear most commonly with rows of flexible wooden slats on which a mattress can be directly placed, alleviating the need for a box spring. They are legless (excluding tatami beds) and often support tatami mats for additional padding beyond the mattress.
- Simple and elegant design
- No need for a box spring
- Cheaper than a traditional bed and mattress set
- Makes a room appear larger and more spacious
- Quieter, especially without a coil / innerspring mattress
- Low to the ground design could make getting up and down difficult
- Some consider platform beds too firm for side sleepers
Best Budget Japanese Platform Bed: Prepac Platform Bed
Finding a dependable Japanese style platform bed can be a struggle, especially on a budget. The Prepac platform bed does a wonderful job of exemplifying Japanese themes while remaining budget-friendly.
With a weight capacity of 500 pounds, it’s safe to say that Prepac makes a strong bed. Rather than slats this bed has a solid flat top, so if you plan on using a memory foam mattress you won’t need to worry about the additional cost of a bunkie board.
The only real disadvantage to this bed is exactly what you would expect. You can call it “high quality laminated composite wood,” but know that’s just a fancy way to say it’s made out of particle board. As long as you aren’t looking for a bed frame that you can pass down to your grandchildren or plan on moving frequently, this bed should work just fine.
- Great value for the price
- Strong and solid design
- No need for a bunkie board
- Available in black, espresso, and oak
- Made out of particle board
- Only available in queen and full

It is simply beautiful, made with 70% hardwood and 30% compressed wood in order to make moving more manageable. Every size larger than a queen is made with a central support bar for greater stability. The only complaint we have is that you won’t find any size smaller than a queen.
